Kashmir Basically comes from Raeshi “Kashyap”. He is said to have resided in Kashmir and doled out the despaired Kashmiris in the times of a flood. It was thus that it was named after him, as “Kashyap-mar” and then subsequently Kashmir.

Well, in the Kashmiri Language, it is called- “Kasheer” and the Kashmiri Language is called ” Kaeshir”/”Koshur”.

Kashmir is said to be the abode of the Kashmiri Pandits, The Shaivites of the valley. The Kashmiri Muslims are placed into different categories for they have different origins. Some of them are the ones who were initially Pandits and then converted to Islam, either due to the Sufi Culture or the forcible conversions by Aurangzeb. SOme of them have Iranian blood in them and some are from Afghanistan. There are also Ladakhi people who belong to the geographical area of Ladakh, a very important region of Kashmir. The adjoining areas, like Skardu, being seized by China. Then there is also another Region of Jammu, which is originally the home of the “Dogras” and has been a refuge for the Kashmir Pandits, who became refugees in their own country.

The Kashmiri Pandit (KP) population is approximately 1 Million throughout the world and they form only 7-8 % of the entire Kashmiri Population. I am a Kashmiri Pandit and lament over the fact that our issues, after the Migration have not been addressed properly, rather have been sidelined.

There are different languages spoken in Kashmir too. They are: Kashmiri, Urdu, Dogri, Hindi, Ladakhi, Kishtwari, Baedrawahi etc. The author shall update the list as she herself is in the learning process.

I have previously worked with the NGO- SAKSHI and have also attended over a year of Prof. Kalpana Kannabiran’s classes. What I have gathered again is a view point. Am still in the process of learning more. This is just an assimilation stage.

I have just joined the Centre for Culture, Law and Society where I hope to do some good work for women and also the society at large. Also through the ICC-India Campaign, i aspire to do the same. Hope SI has something to offer too.

Churchill interests me. I do not know in-depth of his politics. Do not know if he was anti-India or something like that. But all I know as of now is that he was an able statesman and had a panache for finding paths or making one where there is not.

I know of him largely through the quotes he made. Yes, they do tell you a lot about a person. I shall in my next entry list out my favourite quotes.

What my Blog basically looks at is to provide as to what is the history of Kashmir. What according to popular perception (of Kashmiris) is Kashmiriyat. Also, what and who are Kashmiris.

The Task is mammoth, but something done is better than to just look on.

Why and how did i get lost at all? When did it all start? Lets trace down the history. I would say all this happened with myself getting burdened with the responsibilities. hmmm…..it is good in asense but, I think i Lost my childhood…..yeah…
